Proper Watering of Trees

tree watering

To help sustain your trees, water trees deeply with soaker hoses or irrigation systems, as opposed to brief surface watering.  Let the soil get somewhat dry between waterings to avoid “drowning” your trees.

Just Add Water!  Trees require water and oxygen to live just like we do. One comes naturally, not always the cleanest oxygen, but it is there.  The other comes naturally only if Mother Nature provides it on a regular basis.  When our weather is in a drought pattern, then providing water to your trees becomes your responsibility.

If you have a summer that is particularly dry, 6 weeks without any natural rainfall.  The effects of this will be evident in the following year unless you watered your trees through this period. The tree’s damage from drought occurs beneath the soil line in the form of root damage, long before any outward signs of trouble are noticed.  When the roots detect a shortage of water they send out an acid which results in the closing of the stomata pores conserving moisture for later use.  Stressed trees can allow opportunistic pests to take advantage of the situation and make their move to infest your tree. Applying the right amount of water depends on the tree’s actual needs.  It is based on soil, sun and shade exposures, plant types and seasonal local climate.  A 2-3” layer of wood chips will help trees in retaining moisture.

What can you do to keep your trees healthy during hotter, drier months? Just add water!  To help sustain your trees, water trees deeply with soaker hoses or irrigation systems, as opposed to brief surface watering.  Let the soil get somewhat dry between watering to avoid “drowning” your trees.  Water the soil area from the trunk to the branch tips. Use the touch test to help determine watering needs. It is important to remember that woody plants like to have their soils deeply soaked and then allowed to dry before watering again.

Your trees will thank you.
